The Olympics are one of the oldest games in the world, originally starting in 8th Century B.C. The tradition did die out but made a comeback in Greece in 1896 and has been running ever since. The Olympics are the highest level of games for an athlete to compete at, even being given the opportunity to compete is an achievement as it means you’re the best athlete for your country.
Athletes devote years of their lives to training for these games and when watching you can see how much it means to the winners that they’ve won and how devastated the losing competitors are, it’s an extremely emotional challenge. The Olympic games were designed to help promote world peace through sport without discrimination, all countries are invited to compete in the games to encourage a spirit of friendship and solidarity worldwide. The 5 Olympic rings represent the 5 continents in the world and they are linked to symbolize uniting athletes worldwide. Contact sports are widely popular but haven’t been included in the Olympic games. Contact sports are sports in which the competitors come into bodily contact with each other, for example, rugby, American football, ice hockey, and roller derby.
Why Are Contact Sports Not Included?
One of the main reasons that not many contact sports are included in the Olympic games is because the President of the International Olympic Committee and many other members of the committee believe that contact sports can potentially encourage violence which goes against the message of the Olympic games.
Contact sports have the potential to become violent and there is sometimes a lot of aggression involved in contact sports which do go against the Olympic message of peace and solidarity. Contact sports can potentially be dangerous, for example in rugby alone 1 in 4 rugby players face an injury from competing. Each rugby player performs at least 20 tackles in every single match on average so the chances of a player receiving a neck injury are much higher than in non-contact sports. Injuries from rugby can be life-changing as they commonly cause a concussion.
This is a risk the Olympic committee probably does not want to take on as planning the Olympics is already such a huge task, any sports that have a high chance of causing any issues are likely to be rejected from the Olympics due to the potential problems they can cause.
Could More be Included?
For any fans of contact sport out there you’ll be glad to know even with the Olympic committee not fully supporting the message behind contact sports there are several contact sports that are featured in the Olympics. Some of the most popular contact sports that have made it to the Olympic games include boxing, fencing, and hockey. For more contact sports to be included in the Olympics many more precautions will have to be taken to ensure the safety of the athletes to keep any complaints from reaching the committee. A popular sport that many people would love to see included in the Olympic games is martial arts.
There are many different styles of martial arts, we think from research that Brazilian Ju-Jitsu is the martial art people want to see the most. For it to become a part of the Olympic games additional things would have to be taken into account, for example picking the right headgear is important to protect any competitors. On top of this additional knee, support should be provided as this is the most commonly injured area from this sport, also shoulders and ribcage. Many fans believe that after years of training the competitors would not suffer from these injuries and so it should be added to the Olympic games.
